The workshop is held in the spirit of friendly sharing of experiences and insights, and so overnight interactions, discussions and sharing of ideas and experiences will be encouraged and expected.

The BAFA Special Interest Group on Accounting and Finance in Emerging Economies (AFEE) in collaboration with the Accounting Division at Nottingham University Business School is organising its third academic development workshop. Pursuing an academic career can be satisfying, but also a complex and challenging life experience/journey. In particular, the development and/or transition from a research student (e.g., DBA, PhD and MPhil, etc) to early career (e.g., Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer, Post-Doctoral Academic, Research Fellow, Teaching Fellow, Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant, etc), mid-career (e.g., Associate Professor, Reader, Principal Lecturer and Senior Lecturer, etc) and full senior (e.g., Professor and Professorial Fellow, etc) academic that often involves the need to strike a fair balance among education (e.g., maintaining high quality teaching scores and student satisfaction, supervising a large number of postgraduate and undergraduate students, etc), research & enterprise (e.g., publishing high 3*/4* outputs, supervising PhD/research students and securing large external research grants or enterprise income, etc) and service/citizenship (e.g., taking on administrative/leadership/management/pastoral roles, etc) commitments can be challenging.

Therefore and knowing that an academic career is often peppered with unique challenges and opportunities, this workshop will focus on offering participants insights into, and experiences of, how they may navigate this complex journey more smoothly and successfully. The workshop will include three distinct, but closely linked sessions that that will focus progressively on the transitions to the three main stages (early, mid and senior) academic career development journey. The sessions will be in the form of presentations, discussions and sharing of experiences. The discussions will focus on range of issues, ranging from completing the PhD, preparing a job-market paper/publications, CV/cover letter, attending interviews, completing probation to taking on a major leadership roles, amongst others.
