Research/Scholarship Paper Development Workshop

7-8 September, In-person (Glasgow), by application.

Description and Target Audience

The BAFA Accounting Education SIG is delighted to offer a research paper development workshop on 7 and 8 September 2023.

The workshop is aimed at SIG members who are at an early stage in their research journey and have not yet published a paper in a peer-reviewed journal, or have not done so for at least 5 years. We expect that workshop participants will have conducted a research study and will have a first draft of a paper: a draft that is likely to be at the stage when it would benefit from some guidance on how to develop the paper further in preparation for submission to a refereed journal in the field of accounting education.

The workshop will be active. The facilitators will lead discussions on the core elements of research papers and the expectations of journals. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss their work gaining feedback from the workshop facilitators and other participants. Additionally, participants will be guided to critique and discuss the work of others; a skill that can greatly help one’s own writing.

The workshop facilitators will be Greg Stoner, Alan Sangster, Joan Ballantine and Karen McBride (provisionally).

When, Where and Cost

Date and time: 7 September at 09:30–8 September c.16:00. Participants will be expected to attend all sessions.

Location: (Provisionally Glasgow or Portsmouth, but to be confirmed)

There will be no fee for the workshop and funding for hotel costs of up to £150/night will be available for those that need it (for the nights of 7 and 8 September), i.e. for those who are not local and who cannot get funding from their Departments/Schools. Travel to be self or School/Department funded. Expenses will be reimbursed after attendance, invoices/receipts will be required.

Attendees will be expected to present their paper at the next BAFA Accounting Education SIG conference.

How to Apply

To apply to attend the workshop, please complete the application form and send it to Greg Stoner (ae-sig@bafa.ac.uk) and Karen McBride (karen.mcbride@port.ac.uk) by 23 June.

Please note: participants need to submit their draft paper one month in advance of the workshop, i.e. by 7 August so that it can be distributed to other participants for comment and review.

Information Session: What’s it all About (Zoom) – 16 June, 10:00 (BST)

To encourage members to apply for the workshop and/or to help members determine if the workshop is for them, an information session will be held on Zoom on Friday 16th June, 10-11.30am. (please email karen.mcbride@port.ac.uk to receive the zoom link for the session). The session will briefly outline the key elements of a research study, that will need to be in place to prepare a draft paper for inclusion in the workshop. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions etc.
