Accounting Education SIG Annual Conference 2023
Wednesday 17 - Friday 19 May 2023 Durham UniversityThe Accounting Education Special Interest Group are delighted to announce the Annual Conference which will be held at the Durham University Business School from 17–19 May 2023. Following the success of last year’s conference, this year will also be an in-person conference.
Our conference is designed to provide:
- a setting for discussions on a range of accounting education issues, through full and emerging research papers;
- an opportunity for researchers to develop research projects or discuss current work and research ideas;
- an opportunity to showcase innovative teaching practices in Accounting and Finance;
- opportunities for accounting educators to identify partners (individuals or institutions) for collaborative research; and
- an opportunity to join our network of support.

Call for Papers
Deadline: 31 March 2023 EXTENDED to 14 April 2023
The Accounting Education SIG welcomes submissions from established, new or nascent researchers and academics in one of three forms:
Full papers will describe completed or near completed research projects. These papers will be presented in sessions with discussants who will provide critical review comments.
Emerging papers will describe either the initial stages of a project or the initial analysis of findings. Emerging papers will be presented under the Lightning Presentation format.
Learning and teaching innovations will outline the innovative approach, the rationale for its development and the impact on student learning. Emerging papers will be presented under the Lightning Presentation format.
If your paper is accepted for the conference, you may be asked to act as a chair for a session or as a discussant for another paper.
Submission Information
Please submit abstracts through the online submission system by 31 March 14 April 2023. Acceptance will be on a rolling basis up to this date. Please upload your abstract as early as possible to ensure inclusion in the programme.

Full papers
Authors of full papers should submit a structured abstract of 300-350 words using the headings outlined below by 31 March 2023:
- Purpose (mandatory)
- Design/methodology/approach (mandatory)
- Findings (mandatory)
- Research limitations/implications (if applicable)
- Practical implications (if applicable)
- Social implications (if applicable)
- Originality/value (mandatory)

Once accepted and not later than 14 April 2023, full papers should be sent to the conference organiser (beth.picton@durham.ac.uk). These will be distributed to discussant(s) for review prior to the conference. Discussants will present their comments to authors during the conference session. If the full paper is not received by the deadline, the paper may be moved to the emerging papers stream of the conference. Presentation of full papers will be for a maximum of 20 minutes with five minutes for discussant comments and five minutes for questions and answers.
Emerging papers and Learning and Teaching Innovations
We welcome presentation of emerging papers (early draft papers, emerging research ideas, and proposals) as well as presentations of learning and teaching innovations. These will take the form of a lightning presentation. These shorter presentations allow for a quick overview or introduction to a research idea, initial findings or innovation. A lightning presentation gives the presenter up to 10 minutes to present their emerging idea or innovation with an additional five minutes for questions and answers.
For emerging ideas papers and learning and teaching innovations lightning presentations, please submit an abstract of approximately 200 words, covering as many of the structured abstract sub-headings shown under full papers above as appropriate, before 31 March 2023 for consideration for inclusion in the conference programme.

Conference Dinner
The conference dinner will be held in the Town Hall which has been part of Durham’s history since 1350. The cost of dinner is included in your conference ticket so please plan to join us on Thursday evening.
Accommodation
Please note accommodation is not included in the conference ticket. A range of options for different budgets are available. From Premier Inns to Hotel Indigo, the Radisson and the Marriott, Durham has a hotel to suit your needs with many located in the centre. The conference sessions will be held in Durham University Business School, Mill Hill Lane, DH1 3LB. Located just outside the city centre, it is approximately a 30 minute walk or a 7 minute taxi ride.
Using the main reception entrance, you will find our registration desk just inside the door.
Optional Activities
We hope to organise a visit to the Botanic Garden for the morning of Wednesday 17 May before the conference starts. Durham University’s Botanic Garden is account 10 hectares set in mature woodlands and is located close to the conference venue on the south of the city. The cost of this activity is included in the conference ticket so if you are in the city already why not join us.
On Friday afternoon we will be coordinating a visit to the world famous Beamish Museum, the living museum of the North. From eating fish and chips in the Pit Village to raiding the sweet shop in the 1900s town, there is plenty to experience in this living museum. A great way to discover some of the rich history of the North East. There will be small additional cost for those wishing to join this trip.
