Accounting Education SIG Annual Conference 2022

The Accounting Education Special Interest Group (AESIG) are delighted to announce the Annual Conference which will be held at the Adam Smith Business School, University of Glasgow from 18–20 May 2022. This year sees a return to our in- person conference. It is possible that some sessions may be available online. If you are interested in presenting to conference online as you are unable to travel, please contact our conference organiser at beth.picton@durham.ac.uk to discuss this. 

The conference is scheduled a few days after the European Accounting Association (EAA) Annual Congress in Bergen, Norway from 11-13 May 2022 for members who wish to combine their trips.

Our conference is designed to provide:

• a setting for discussions on a range of accounting education issues, through full and emerging research papers;
• an opportunity for researchers to develop research projects or discuss current work and research ideas;
• an opportunity to showcase innovative teaching practices in Accounting and Finance;
• opportunities for accounting educators to identify partners (individuals or institutions) for collaborative research; and
• an opportunity to join our network of support.

Keynote Speakers

Professor Ian Thomson, Director, Lloyds Banking Group Centre for Responsible Business and Convenor of the Centre for Social and Environmental Accounting Research, University of Birmingham

Professor Barbara Flood, Professor of Accounting at Dublin City University (DCU) and the recipient of the BAFA Outstanding Contribution to Accounting and Finance Education for 2021.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Deadline: 21 March 2022

The Accounting Education SIG welcomes submissions from established, new or nascent researchers and academics in one of three forms:

Full papers.
Papers that describe completed or near completed research projects. These papers will be presented in sessions with discussants who will provide critical review comments. 

Emerging papers will describe either the initial stages of a project or the initial analysis of findings. Emerging papers will be presented under the Pecha Kucha format (additional information overleaf). 

Learning and teaching innovations will outline the innovative approach, the rationale for its development and the impact on student learning. Innovations will also be presented under the Pecha Kucha format.

If your paper is accepted for the conference, you may be asked to act as a chair for a session or as a discussant for another paper. 

Deadlines

Please submit abstracts through the online submission system by 21 March 2022. Acceptance will be on a rolling basis up to this date. Please upload your abstract as early as possible as we may have to impose a capacity limit due to Government restrictions.

Full papers

By 21 March 2022, authors of full papers should submit a structured abstract of 300-350 words using the headings outlined below:

• Purpose (mandatory)
• Design/methodology/approach (mandatory)
• Findings (mandatory)
• Research limitations/implications (if applicable)
• Practical implications (if applicable)
• Social implications (if applicable)
• Originality/value (mandatory)

Once accepted and not later than 18 April 2022, full papers should be sent to the conference organiser (beth.picton@durham.ac.uk). These will be distributed to discussant(s) for review prior to the conference. Discussants will present their comments to authors during the conference session. If the full paper is not received by the deadline, the paper may be moved to the emerging papers stream of the conference..

Emerging papers/Learning and Teaching Innovations – Pecha Kucha style

We welcome presentations of emerging ideas for papers as well as presentations of teaching innovations under a Pecha Kucha format. This format is a simple presentation format where you show 20 slides, each for 20 seconds. Your presentation should be set to advance slides automatically every 20 seconds. Your total time for the presentation is therefore 400 seconds or approximately seven minutes. There will be a short time for questions and contributions from the audience immediately after the presentation, with further discussion and collaboration encouraged in the breaks following each session. For emerging ideas papers and teaching innovations, please submit an abstract of approximately 200 words, covering as many of the structured abstract sub-headings shown under full papers above as appropriate, before 28 February 2022 for acceptance of the idea and inclusion in the conference programme.

Fee: £200

Registration is currently open and will close on Monday, 9 May 2022. This year the conference fee is £200. This reduced fee level is to encourage as many as possible to attend conference and present their work. The fee covers all conference sessions, lunches and refreshments, a welcome drinks reception and the conference dinner.

You will need to be a member of BAFA to register for the conference. You can become a member by visiting bafa.ac.uk/membership. The cost is £30 (£15 if unsalaried PhD/MPhil student or retired) for 12 months.

To register for the conference, please login to your BAFA account Once logged in, please choose 'Purchase Tickets' from the list of options. The ticket is virtual only and you do not need to produce it at the conference.

Conference Dinner

The conference dinner on Thursday evening will take place aboard the historic Glenlee, an iconic tall ship built on the Clyde and one of only five still afloat in the world.

The Glenlee has sailed the world. Now returned to the river on which she was launched she stands as testament to Clyde Shipbuilding, the Scottish maritime tradition and Glasgow’s mercantile success.

On Thursday 19 May 2022, we will enjoy a wonderful three course meal in this unique setting. Following dinner there will be a cèilidh (pronounced KAY – lee), a traditional Scottish gathering with music and dancing. Please note appropriate footwear will be required on the boat i.e. no heels. This evening is included in your conference cost for this year.

Accommodation

There are a range of hotels you can book for your conference stay. You may wish to stay in the centre of Glasgow as there are good transport / taxi links to the University (West End area) and there is a huge range of accommodation available.

Within easy walking distance to the University is the Glasgow Grosvenor Hotel (11 minute walk). This is close to the Botanic Gardens and there are a number of bars and restaurants nearby.

On the other side of the University, near the River Clyde and close to the venue of the dinner are a number of modern hotels which are reasonably close to the University and can be accessed by public transport/taxi including:

Radisson Red (25 minute walk)

Hilton Garden Inn (26 minute walk)

Crowne Plaza (30 minute walk)

These are close to the Finnieston area of Glasgow where there are a wide range of restaurants, though it may be advisable to book in advance as it is a very popular to area to eat in. Also in this area are a wide range of budget hotels.

Optional Activities

We hope to be able to offer a number of optional activities including a tour of the University of Glasgow, a visit to the local Whisky and Gin distillery or a whisky tasting. The University has the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery and the Mackintosh House on the campus and close by is the famous Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum (5 minute walk), and the conference dinner is next to the award winning Riverside (transport) Museum.
