STATEMENT REGARDING COVID-19

Following Government advice and the current closure of the University of Glasgow we have taken the decision to postpone the BAFA-AE-SIG 2020 conference due to take place on 20-22 May 2020.

We have made the decision to run the rearranged conference at the same place and time next year: University of Glasgow, 19-21 May 2021.

We look forward to welcoming you to the event. Everyone with a paper, an emerging paper or learning and teaching innovation accepted for this year’s conference will be given the opportunity to present an updated version next year. Details of the process for resubmission will be provided nearer the time.

In the meantime we hope to offer alternative ways of the providing opportunities for our community to join together later this year. We therefore encourage you to maintain your BAFA and AE-SIG membership to allow you to join in these events, including virtual workshops and blogs. Please make sure that you have joined the AE-SIG by ticking the appropriate box in your BAFA membership profile (at https://members.bafa.ac.uk/account/), as the list generated from membership profiles will be used for announcements.

The BAFA AE-SIG Executive have taken the decision to refund all 2020 AE-SIG Conference fee payments to delegates: there is no need to contact BAFA about this as the repayments will be made automatically. Please be patient as we organise this, it may take a little while. If you haven’t received the refund by the end of April please contact our administrator, Tracy, at admin@bafa.ac.uk. We regret that we are unable to refund travel or accommodation expenses incurred, which you will need to discuss with the provider, your institution or insurers.

The 2020 conference will be hosted by the Adam Smith Business School of the University of Glasgow on  20-22 May 2020. Founded in 1451, the University of Glasgow is the fourth oldest university in the English‐speaking world and the Adam Smith Business School is founded on Adam Smith’s legacy. Accounting and Finance has been established at the University of Glasgow since 1925, and in 2018 celebrated 50 years of its Bachelor of Accounting degree ‐ the BAcc. The conference is scheduled a few days before the European Accounting Association (EAA) Annual Congress in Bucharest, Romania, 27-29 May.

The conference is designed to provide:

  • a setting for discussions of research on a range of accounting education issues, both full and emerging papers;
  • an opportunity for researchers to develop research projects or discuss current work and research ideas;
  • an opportunity to share innovative teaching practices in accounting, tax and audit;
  • opportunities for accounting educators to identify partners (individuals or institutions) for collaborative research;
  • a opportunity to join our network of support.

Keynote Speakers

Professor Ray Land, Emeritus Professor of Higher Education, Durham University UK. Best known for his theory (with Jan Meyer) of Threshold Concepts and Troublesome Knowledge

Professor Neil Marriott, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Winchester, 2019 recipient of the BAFA Outstanding Contribution to Accounting Education Award.

Paper Submissions 

The Accounting Education SIG welcomes submissions from established, new or nascent researchers and academics in one of three forms:

Full papers will describe completed or near completed research projects. These papers will be presented in sessions with discussant’s who will provide critical review comments.

  • Once accepted, full papers should be sent to the conference organiser no later than 20 April 2020 and will be distributed to discussant(s) for review prior to the conference. Discussants will present their comments to authors during the conference session. If the full paper is not received by the deadline, the paper may be moved to the emerging research stream of the conference.

Emerging papers will describe either the initial stages of a project or the initial analysis of findings. Emerging papers will be presented under the Pechakucha format.

Learning and teaching innovations will outline the innovative approach, the rationale for its development and the impact on student learning and will be presented under the Pechakucha format.

Bursary award

Applicants are invited from doctoral students or early career researchers for an award of a free place and bursary towards expenses of up to £500 to attend the conference. The recipient would need to meet the following criteria:

  • be a full-time doctoral student or an early career academic with less than 5 years prior academic employment
  • not have previously attended a BAFA AE-SIG conference, and
  • submit and present a full research paper.

Applicants for the award should email the Chair of the AE-SIG directly ( ae-sig@bafa.ac.uk) by 21st February 2020 explaining why they are applying for the award (maximum of 500 words) attaching a full CV and estimate of costs/ expenses (excluding the conference fee).

Hotel Options near the University of Glasgow

Within easy walking distance to the University is the

Grosvenor Hilton (11 minute walk)

This is close to the Botanic Gardens and there are a number of bars and restaurants nearby.

On the other side of the University, near the River Clyde and close to the venue of the dinner are a number of modern hotels which are reasonably close to the University and can be accessed by public transport/taxi including:

• Radisson Red (25 minute walk)

• Hilton Garden Inn (26 minute walk)

• Crowne Plaza (30 minute walk)

These are close to the Finnieston area of Glasgow where there are a wide range of restaurants, though it may be advisable to book in advance as it is a very popular to area to eat in. Also in this area are a wide range of budget hotels.

The Lorne Hotel is a reasonably priced 4 star hotel close to the University, also in the Finnieston area.

It is also possible to stay in the centre of Glasgow as there are good transport / taxi links to the University (West End area). There is a huge range of accommodation available.

Optional Activities

We hope to be able to offer a number of optional activities including a tour of the University of Glasgow, a visit to the local Whisky and Gin distillery or a whisky tasting. The University has the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery and the Mackintosh House on the campus and close by is the famous Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum (5 minute walk), and the conference dinner is next to the award winning Riverside (transport) Museum.

If you are staying in Glasgow before or after the conference there are hundreds of attractions and things to do in the city and transport links will enable you to go further afield should you want to visit other places such as Edinburgh, Stirling or Dundee.
