BAFA Northern Area Group Annual Conference 2018

CALL FOR PAPERS

We have pleasure in inviting you to the annual conference of the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA) Northern Area Group, which will be held at Derby Business School, Derby University, UK on the 10th and the 11th September 2018. Contributions from all areas of accounting and finance are invited for the conference.

Keynote Speakers

Professor Marc Claworthy

Mark Clatworthy is Professor of Accounting at the University of Bristol. His research examines the links between accounting information and capital markets and audit markets. He is joint editor of Accounting and Business Research and he teaches advanced financial reporting at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is a member of the ICAS Strategy and Research Advisory Group and the FRC Academic Panel.

Mark is to talk on “Academic-Practice Links in Financial Accounting”.

Professor Nicholas Wilson

Nicholas Wilson has held the Chair in Credit Risk and Finance at Leeds University Business School and is Director of the Credit Management Research Centre. He is Head of the Accounting and Finance Division and has been Director of Research at LUBS. His research focuses on the private company sector, venture capital and private equity, credit risk modelling, and board characteristics and governance.

Nick has received a number of large research grants from the ESRC, Government departments, commercial sponsors and other funding bodies. He has acted as a consultant for the National Audit Office, Office of Fair Trading, Department of Trade and Industry, The Stationery Office (Insolvency Forecasting), amongst others.

Nick has published in leading journals such as the Economic Journal, British Journal of Management, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Banking and Finance, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice and International Small Business Journal.

Nick is to talk on “Board and Director characteristics in the UK corporate sector”.

Professor Trevor Williams

Trevor is Chief Economist at Lloyds Bank Commercial. His main responsibilities at Lloyds are for forecasting key economic and financial trends in the UK and globally using econometric models, and supervising the economics team at Lloyds Commercial, which supports the Bank’s trading and sales activities. He regularly writes articles for publications in trade journals such as Derivatives Magazine, Accountancy Magazine, The Manufacturer, and Moneyfacts, and appears in the financial press and on television. Trevor is a leading member of the Institute for Economic Affairs Shadow Monetary Policy Committee, made up of leading independent monetary economists. Trevor Williams is also on the editorial board of Economia and the Journal of Corporate Treasury Management.

Trevor will talk on the “Future of finance and in light of technology”.

Paper submission

Papers are welcome from all areas of accounting and finance. Submissions can range from early working drafts to fully developed papers. Please submit via email a 250-word abstract of your proposed submission to Elaine Conway: E.Conway@derby.ac.uk by the 1st July 2018. Your abstract should be in an attached Word file.

Selection will be undertaken by a committee of reviewers. Authors will be notified of their decision by 15th July.

Full versions of accepted abstracts should be submitted by 25th August. Papers will be available on the conference website shortly after the submission deadline.

Registration

Paper Presenters must register for the conference on-line on or before 30th August to secure a place on the programme. The final deadline to register for attendance only is 30th August. Please note places are limited and so please register early to avoid disappointment.

Fees

  • £130 for members or £160 for non-members (to include £30 annual membership)
  • £100 for PhD students or £115 for non-members (to include £15 annual membership)

The fees cover conference registration and pack, lunch, tea and coffee for the two days, and the conference dinner on 10th September 2018. Accommodation

Accommodation is also available on a first come first served basis at the Derby Conference Centre (contact details as above) at the following rates including breakfast:

Standard room, single occupancy: £60.00 inc VAT per night

Standard room, double occupancy: £65.00 inc VAT per night

Premier room, single occupancy: £80.00 inc VAT per night

Premier room, double occupancy: £85.00 inc VAT per night

(Please note there are 6 premier rooms, 2 twin rooms, 3 single rooms and 39 double rooms).

The conference itself will be held at the main Kedleston Road campus of the university.
