Vacancies: Accounting History SIG
There are several opportunities open for volunteers to work with BAFA. We accept self-nominations and nominations from friends/colleagues for posts. Please do not be too modest or wait to be asked – your interest in any of these positions would be very much welcomed.
Accounting History Special Interest Group
In the AHSIG, all Committee members have an active role. The roles of Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer, Immediate past chairperson and external liaison are formal roles required by the Constitution. All the other roles are determined by the Executive Committee of the SIG. Members of the Executive may need to allocate new roles during the year between elections or appointment.
The AHSIG invites expressions of interest and nominations for the following posts to serve on the Executive Committee. You need to be a member of BAFA and of the AHSIG for you to be appointed to any of these roles.

All roles on the committee involve promoting AHSIG and BAFA in accordance with their aims. Specifically, for AHSIG these are to:
- encouraging research and scholarship in accounting history;
- establishing and supporting a network of researchers and teachers in accounting history
- enhancing the teaching of accounting history;
- supporting the development of emerging scholars in accounting history;
- providing support for doctoral students in accounting history;
- providing a forum for interaction of ideas among accounting academics interested in accounting history;
- developing close links with similar groups elsewhere so as to foster and promote an international community of accounting historians.
- promote Accounting History through the newsletter and periodic special workshops andevents.
The elections for the officers will be held at the AHSIG Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 18 December 2025.
1. Chair
The Chair is responsible for leadership and strategic direction for the AHSIG. The Chair guides its activities to promote research, scholarship, teaching, and community-building in accounting history, fostering national and international engagement. Operationally, the Chair is responsible for:
- Developing the strategy of the AHSIG in alignment with its core purposes, including supporting research, enhancing teaching, and fostering a vibrant community of accounting historians.
- Leading the AHSIG Committee, and along with the Secretary, ensuring effective governance, transparent decision-making, and adherence to constitutional or association guidelines.
- Attending and leading AHSIG committee meetings and the Annual General Meeting. There are normally at least two meetings during the year one online and one at the BAFA conference.
- Overseeing the development, implementation, and review of plans, initiatives, and events.
- Serving as the representative of the AHSIG within BAFA and the academic and professional community.
- Promoting the role and value of accounting history to academics and external partners.
- Strengthening national and international links with similar groups, research networks, and professional institutes for collaborative activities and knowledge exchange.
- Championing initiatives that support emerging scholars and PhD students in accounting history.
- Facilitating opportunities for members to share research, access resources, and engage in scholarly dialogue.
- Providing oversight of AHSIG events and publications, including targeted workshops, doctoral events, newsletters, and sponsored activities.
- Working closely with committee members responsible for communications, external liaison, events, and other portfolios to ensure active engagement and successful delivery.
- Facilitating open communication across the AHSIG membership, for transparency and inclusivity.
2. Secretary/Treasurer
With the Chair, the Secretary/Treasurer as executive officers provide oversight of the AHSIG activities and ensure compliance with BAFA policies and external compliance such as GDPR. Operationally, the Secretary is responsible for:
- Attending and minuting AHSIG committee meetings and the Annual General Meeting. There are normally at least two meetings during the year one online and one at the BAFA conference, ensuring timely circulation of agendas, papers and minutes.
- Providing minutes to all AHSIG committee members and a summary to the bi-annual newsletter.
- Promoting and administering doctoral and early career AHSIG schemes.
- Liaising with the Chair and other appropriate committee members in respect of AHSIG winter series webinars and in-person workshop.
- Liaising with the Chair and other committee members in respect of the BAFA annual conference activities such as the selection of papers to be accepted on behalf of the SIG.
Operationally, the Treasurer is responsible for:
- Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of all AHSIG financial transactions, including income, sponsorship, and expenditure.
- Monitoring AHSIG’s financial position and ensuring resources are used effectively to support events, publications, initiatives, and strategic priorities.
- Managing bank accounts/institutional financial arrangements in accordance with BAFA and AHSIG procedures.
- Forecasting future financial needs and advising on the sustainability of proposed activities.
- Preparing and delivering the annual financial report, ensuring transparency and accuracy.
- Working closely with the Chair, and other committee members eg External liaison – Sponsorship, co-ordinating on the management of sponsorship income.
3. External Liaison – Sponsorship
The External Liaison – Sponsorship is responsible for developing, coordinating, and sustaining relationships with external organisations in support of the AHSIG. The role strengthens the SIG’s connections with the accounting and finance profession, related academic bodies, professional institutes, and potential sponsors in order to further the AHSIG’s objectives. Operationally the External Liaison – Sponsorship is responsible for:
- Attending AHSIG committee meetings and the Annual General Meeting. There are normally at least two meetings during the year one online and one at the BAFA conference.
- Sponsorship Development and Management, by Identifying, approaching, and cultivating relationships with potential sponsors from professional accountancy and finance bodies, academic institutions, publishers, historic, heritage and GLAM organisations and other relevant stakeholders.
- Developing a clear sponsorship framework aligned with AHSIG’s objectives and values.
- Securing sponsorship for AHSIG activities, including workshops, doctoral events, newsletters, prizes, and conference initiatives.
- Maintaining accurate records of sponsorship agreements and ensuring compliance with terms.
4. External Liaison - Europe
The External Liaison – Europe is responsible for developing, coordinating, and sustaining relationships with external organisations in Europe in support of the AHSIG. The role strengthens external liaison and relationship building in Europe. Operationally the External Liaison – Europe is responsible for:
- Acting as the principal point of contact between AHSIG and external partners within Europe, including professional institutes, historical societies, and international accounting history groups.
- Strengthening AHSIG’s links with the accounting and finance profession within Europe to support knowledge exchange and inform policy debates relevant to accounting history.
- Fostering collaborations with related academic networks and special interest groups to support a global community of accounting historians.
- Provide information for the AHSIG bi-annual newsletter relating to accounting history activities in Europe.
- Promoting the AHSIG and its activities within Europe.
5. External Liaison – Australasia
The External Liaison – Australasia is responsible for developing, coordinating, and sustaining relationships with external organisations in Australasia in support of the AHSIG. The role strengthens external liaison and relationship building in Australasia. Operationally the External Liaison – Australasia is responsible for:
- Acting as the principal point of contact between AHSIG and external partners within Australasia, including professional institutes, historical societies, and international accounting history groups.
- Strengthening AHSIG’s links with the accounting and finance profession within Australasia to support knowledge exchange and inform policy debates relevant to accounting history.
- Fostering collaborations with related academic networks and special interest groups to support a global community of accounting historians.
- Provide information for the AHSIG bi-annual newsletter relating to accounting history activities in Europe.
- Promoting the AHSIG and its activities within Australasia.
Co-Opted Role(s) (maximum of 1)
We welcome expressions of interest for co-opted roles. This should outline the nature of the proposed role for which you would like to be considered and any relevant experience (maximum 1 A4 page).

Deadline: For expressions of interest and nominations for all roles is 10 December 2025 at 12pm.
Expressions of interest for all posts should be e-mailed to the Chair (copied to Secretary) by the deadline. Expressions of interest should include details of how the nominee has been involved in the accounting history community and the AHSIG, and what areas of expertise they would bring to the Committee.
