Below we include the eulogy prepared by the FARSIG committee, the group that Professor Jones founded.

It is with great sadness that at the Financial Reporting and Special Interest Group (FARSIG) we have learned the news that Professor Michael John Jones has passed away on the 4th of September.

Mike was an inspirational colleague for FARSIG and its community. If FARSIG has become a well-established and highly successful international research group, it is because of Mike. Mike founded FARSIG in 2006, replacing the Financial Reporting and Business Communication Unit (FRBCU) which he established in 1996. Along with his Professorial positions at Cardiff University first and University of Bristol later, he successfully led FARSIG as its Chair for 24 consecutive years from its establishment until he stepped down in 2021. Mike was the person behind the success of FARSIG being one of the largest Special Interest Groups of BAFA and of the associated annual Financial Reporting and Business Communication conference. Mike was very passionate about his work at FARSIG and put his heart and soul into making FARSIG what has become today.

The FARSIG community will be eternally grateful to Mike for his support and encouragement. Mike was a very supportive, passionate, and caring person. He was not just a colleague or a mentor, but also a friend. He was prepared to give you a hand if he could – something that many members of the FARSIG community, and outside it, have been grateful for on numerous occasions. His long-standing career and outstanding academic achievements were rewarded with the BAFA Distinguished Academic Award in 2021.

Mike has left behind a very real legacy, which will affect the way we do things at FARISG for a very long time to come. Everyone at FARSIG who has worked alongside Mike will remember him with great affection.

Rest in peace Mike.
