Call for Applications: Associate Editors of The British Accounting Review
The British Accounting Review (BAR), the official journal of the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA), is seeking applications and nominations for new Associate Editors (AEs) to support its continued development and editorial excellence.
About the Journal
BAR is a well-established international journal publishing high-quality research across the broad domains of accounting and finance. BAR’s 2024 CiteScore (8.1) and Impact Factor (9.4) respectively rank the journal #21 in Business, Management and Accounting, and #4 in Business, Finance. It is rated A* in the ABDC Journal Quality Guide.
We welcome diverse theoretical and methodological approaches and are committed to publishing work that is innovative, impactful, and relevant to both academics and practitioners. As a generalist journal, we value contributions that advance understanding across areas including financial accounting, management accounting, auditing, corporate governance, corporate finance, financial markets, ESG, and related topics.
We particularly welcome submissions—and, by extension, editorial involvement—that reflect a diversity of geographical perspectives, disciplinary traditions, and methodological approaches, including qualitative, archival, experimental, and theoretical work. BAFA is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, and we warmly welcome expressions of interest from members of all backgrounds and communities.
Role and Expectations of Associate Editors
Associate Editors are central to the peer review process and help ensure the integrity, rigour, and timeliness of editorial decisions. Responsibilities include:
- Managing the review process efficiently within the expected timeline for approximately 10 manuscripts annually, including securing appropriate referees and making editorial recommendations to the Joint Editors.
- Participating in annual editorial meetings and occasional strategic consultations.
- Maintaining the highest standards of editorial confidentiality and integrity.
- Providing input on editorial policy and processes, as appropriate.
Criteria for Appointment
To ensure the quality and rigour of the review process, successful applicants will typically:
- Have an established international research reputation in a subject area aligned with the journal’s scope.
- Demonstrate a strong and sustained publication record in high-quality journals (preferably ABS 4, ABDC A*, FT50, UTD24 or equivalent).
- Have editorial or reviewing experience for leading journals in accounting, finance, or related disciplines.
- Be able to manage editorial responsibilities in a timely and constructive manner.
We especially encourage applications from underrepresented groups and from colleagues based in regions or institutions less frequently represented in editorial roles.

The standard term is three years, renewable once by mutual agreement and subject to performance review. Appointments will be made by the BAR Joint Editors, subject to advice and agreement from the BAR Steering Group.
