BAFA SITUATIONS VACANT: BAFA Treasurer

There are several opportunities open for volunteers to work with BAFA. We accept self-nominations and nominations from friends/colleagues for posts. Please do not be too modest or wait to be asked – your interest in any of these positions would be very much welcomed. 

 BAFA Executive Committee

The British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA) invites expressions of interest for the position of Treasurer. This is a key leadership and governance role that sits at the heart of BAFA’s operations, supporting the financial stewardship of the Association and enabling its strategic aims to be delivered.

BAFA Treasurer

Period: 1 May 2026–30 April 2029

Key Responsibilities

As Treasurer:

  • Support the President, Vice-President, Executive Committee and Trustees in delivering BAFA’s strategic priorities.
  • Act as the principal officer responsible for BAFA’s financial management, bank accounts, treasury policy, oversight, and reporting.
  • Oversee BAFA’s financial planning and budgeting processes, ensuring that the Association’s resources are managed effectively and sustainably.
  • Prepare and present regular financial reports to the BAFA Executive Committee and Trustees, providing clear oversight of income, expenditure, and financial performance.
  • Ensure that appropriate financial controls, policies, and procedures are in place and maintained in line with regulatory and charity governance requirements.
  • Oversee the preparation of BAFA’s annual accounts and coordinate with any external accountants or auditors, as well as the BAFA Bookkeeper and administrator, as required.
  • Work closely with the BAFA Administrator and Bookkeeper to ensure the efficient management of day-to-day financial transactions, including membership income, conference finances, and operational expenditure.
  • Provide financial guidance and oversight to BAFA’s Standing Committees, Special Interest Groups, Area Groups, and Conference Committees where financial matters arise.
  • Monitor BAFA’s financial position and advise the Executive Committee and Trustees on financial risks, opportunities, and long-term sustainability.
  • Support continuity and institutional memory within BAFA by ensuring effective financial record-keeping and handover across office holders.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • An academic or professional with a strong commitment to the accounting and finance academic community.
  • Demonstrated experience of financial management, governance, or organisational leadership within a university, learned society, or professional body.
  • Strong organisational and financial management skills, with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Clear commitment to BAFA’s mission and values, including promoting diversity, inclusion, and early-career development.
  • Ability to dedicate appropriate time and energy to the role over a three-year term.
  • Active BAFA member or willing to become an active BAFA member by registering as a member at the time of submitting your application (annual membership fee is £15 or £30 depending on your circumstance) (see here: https://bafa.ac.uk/membership/).

Desirable:

  • Prior involvement in BAFA activities, such as special interest groups, conferences, or executive roles.
  • Experience of financial reporting, budgeting, or financial oversight in an academic, charitable, or professional organisation.
  • Familiarity with charity or learned society governance.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across a diverse academic community.
