BAFA SITUATIONS VACANT - BAFA General Secretary

There are several opportunities open for volunteers to work with BAFA. We accept self-nominations and nominations from friends/colleagues for posts. Please do not be too modest or wait to be asked – your interest in any of these positions would be very much welcomed. 

 BAFA Executive Committee

The British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA) invites expressions of interest for the position of General Secretary. This is a key leadership and governance role that sits at the heart of BAFA’s operations, supporting the smooth and effective running of the Association and enabling its strategic aims to be delivered.

BAFA General Secretary

Period: 1 May 2026–30 April 2029

Key Responsibilities

As General Secretary:

  • Support the President, Vice-President, Executive Committee and Trustees in delivering BAFA’s strategic priorities.
  • Act as the principal officer responsible for BAFA’s governance, administration, and constitutional affairs.
  • Oversee the organisation of BAFA Executive Committee meetings, including preparing agendas, coordinating papers, recording minutes, and ensuring that decisions are implemented and appropriately documented.
  • Maintain BAFA’s official records, including policies, procedures, and constitutional documents, ensuring compliance with regulatory and charity governance requirements.
  • Work closely with the BAFA Treasurer on matters relating to financial governance, reporting, and oversight.
  • Liaise with BAFA’s Administrator to ensure the efficient day-to-day running of the Association.
  • Support the work of BAFA’s Standing Committees, Special Interest Groups, Area Groups, and Conference Committees by providing guidance on governance and process.
  • Act as a central point of contact between BAFA’s officers, members, and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the organisation and delivery of BAFA’s annual conference and other events.
  • Support continuity and institutional memory within BAFA by ensuring effective handover and record-keeping across office holders.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • A senior academic or professional with a strong commitment to the accounting and finance academic community.
  • Demonstrated experience of committee work, governance, or organisational leadership within a university, learned society, or professional body.
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills, with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Clear commitment to BAFA’s mission and values, including promoting diversity, inclusion, and early-career development.
  • Ability to dedicate appropriate time and energy to the role over a three-year term.
  • Active BAFA member or willing to become an active BAFA member by registering as a member at the time of submitting your application (annual membership fee is £15 or £30 depending on your circumstance) (see here: https://bafa.ac.uk/membership/).

Desirable:

  • Prior involvement in BAFA activities, such as special interest groups, conferences, or executive roles.
  • Experience of working with or supporting committees, boards, or trustees.
  • Familiarity with charity or learned society governance.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across a diverse academic community.
