Annual Conference 2017 with Doctoral Masterclasses
Monday 10 - Wednesday 12 April 2017 Herriot Watt University, EdinburghThe British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA) is pleased to announce details of its 2017 Annual Conference in Edinburgh.
Our strategic aims are to be a vibrant association of choice for accounting and finance academics; the voice and resource of the accounting and finance community; and campaigners for accounting and finance research and pedagogy. We are developing our conference to reflect those aims and a number of changes have been made to the format from previous years.
For 2017, we will be increasing our support for doctoral students and incorporating them more into the accounting and finance community represented at the conference. We will continue the workshops begun in Bath in 2016, and add in sessions relating to teaching and to our campaigns in higher education. We will build on our online programme to include social networking, sponsor, exhibitor and other information. Most importantly, we will provide a showcase for innovative research and teaching in accounting and finance.
We hope you will join us in Edinburgh 2017 and in London 2018 to be part of changing the conference experience for the 21 st century.
2018 is also the 50 th Anniversary of The British Accounting Review (BAR), which itself is set to develop in exciting new directions.
Join BAFA to get more news about all conference and other developments on a regular basis.

Paper Submissions (Closed)
MAIN PARALLEL SESSIONS
Paper submission opens: 1 September 2016
Deadline: 5 December 2016
DOCTORAL MASTERCLASSES
Abstract Submission opens: 4 January 2017
Deadline: 31 January 2017
We invite submissions of full papers on any topic in the disciplines of accounting and finance.
All papers will be fully refereed. We aim to notify acceptance decisions on 4 January 2017. For accepted papers, the corresponding author** needs to have registered for the conference by 1 March 2017 for their paper to be included in the conference programme.
In 2017, we are changing the way in which we organise the conferences for doctoral students. Students will be able to take one only of the following two options:
1. Doctoral students in their third year and beyond are invited to submit full papers to the main parallel sessions in the conference. They will have a designated academic ‘buddy’ in the conference who will attend their presentation and offer feedback following the session, as well as receiving feedback in the session from the audience. Papers that are not accepted for presentation in one of the main parallel sessions will be automatically put in the doctoral masterclass sessions.
2. All doctoral students not submitting to the main parallel sessions as described in 1 above are invited to submit an abstract for the doctoral masterclasses on Monday 10 April 2017. Students will be invited to present their own work, discuss one other students work and will get feedback from faculty and other students. All PhD students will have a designated academic ‘buddy’ for the whole conference. Students are expected to attend all sessions on Monday 10 April 2017 and will only be awarded a certificate of attendance on this basis. Students are also expected to attend the whole conference. There are 80 places available on a first come, first served basis. Acceptances will be notified on a weekly basis from 6 January 2017 up to 3 February 2017
For details on how to submit your abstract/paper, please visit our Conference FAQs page. Guidelines for abstracts and papers will be posted on this page shortly.
*Please note that due to the high demand to present papers we are only able to receive one paper from each corresponding author (the corresponding author does not need to be the paper’s lead author). If you are a co-author on more than one paper you wish to have presented at the conference, then a different co-author will need to act as corresponding author and purchase a ticket to attend.
