Accounting Education SIG Annual Conference 2018

Wednesday 2 - Friday 4 May 2018 Hilton Metropole, Brighton

We are pleased to announce that the deadline for submission of abstracts has been extended. Submit a structured abstract of 300-350 words on or before Monday, 26 March 2018 to: aesig2018@sussex.ac.uk. Papers may be either full papers or emerging ideas papers.


The conference (http://www.sussex.ac.uk/bam/bafa-conference/) is designed to provide:

  • a setting for discussions of research into innovations in accounting education amongst a range of other topics in the area of accounting education;
  • a forum for presenting emerging and full papers;
  • workshops at which researchers can develop ideas for research projects or discuss current work and ideas;
  • opportunities for accounting educators to identify partners (or institutions) for collaborative research;
  • a network of continuing support amongst attendees.

Keynote Speakers

Keynote speakers are:

Dr Miklos A. Vasarhelyi Miklos Vasarheyli

Professor Vasarhelyi was awarded the Outstanding Educator of the year by the American Accounting Association (AAA) in 2014.

He is the KPMG Distinguished Professor of Accounting Information Systems and Director of the Rutgers Accounting Research Center (RARC) & Continuous Auditing and Reporting Laboratory (CARLAB) at Rutgers University, Newark NJ, USA. He also leads the RADAR (Rutgers AICPA Data Analytics Research Initiative) project supported by the 8 leading CPA firms, AICPA, and CPA Canada.

He has published more than 220 journal articles, 20 books, and directed over 42 Ph.D. theses. He is the editor of the Artificial Intelligence in Accounting and Auditing series and the Journal of Emerging Technologies in Accounting. Professor Vasarhelyi has taught executive programs on electronic commerce to many large international organizations including GE, J&J, Eli Lilly, Baxter, ADL, Volvo, Siemens, Chase Bank, and AT&T.

Professor Vasarhelyi is credited with the original continuous audit application and as the leading researcher in this field. The CAR Lab’s projects include among others Siemens, KPMG, P&G, AICPA, CA Technologies, and Itau-Unibanco. Prof. Vasarhelyi was presented with the Wasserman award by ISACA in 2013.

Dr Timothy J. Fogarty

Tim Fogarty

Timothy J. Fogarty has served in several capacities at the national level for the American Accounting Association (AAA), including Vice President – Education for that organization.

He is a professor in the accountancy department at the Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University. He is also the Thomas Dickerson Faculty Fellow at that school. He has published over two hundred seventy articles on a wide variety of topics, in both academic and practitioner journals.

His research interests include accounting education, the sociology of business organizations, and the regulation of professionals. He serves on the editorial boards of over twenty journals. He has worked on research projects for the Financial Executives Research Foundations and on educational matters for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).

He also has been involved with the accreditation of business schools. At Case Western, he previously served as department chair and associate dean, currently teaches across the curriculum, and serves in several University-level capacities. He has been an attorney for forty years and a CPA for thirty-five years.

Conference Venue

The BAFA conference will take place in Brighton. The venue for the conference will be the Hilton Brighton Metropole Hotel.

Papers may be either full or emerging ideas papers.

Deadline for submission of structured abstracts is before Wednesday, 28 February 2018.
