BAFA Northern Area Group Annual Conference 2017

We have pleasure in inviting you to the annual conference of the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA) Northern Area Group, which will be held at Bangor Business School , Bangor University, UK on the 14th and the 15th September 201. 

Journal Special Issues 

This year, the BAFA Northern Area Group, has linked up with the Journal of Financial Regulation and Compliance. In its 25 th year of publishing high quality contributions in the field of financial regulation the journal has agreed to devote a special issue for selected papers presented at the conference to be published at in 2019. The special issue theme is “Contemporary Issues in Banking, Finance and Accounting Regulation”. Papers for the special issue will be subject to peer-review in line with the journal’s normal practice. Please note that authors will have the option for their paper to be considered for the special issue and that papers presented at the conference have no guarantee of publication in the JFRC. Further details of the special issue will be circulated in due course.

Keynote Speakers 

Professor Santiago Carbo-Valverde and Professor Edward Lee Santiago 

Carbo-Valverde is a Professor of Economics and Finance at Bangor University and President and Chair of the International Banking, Economics and Finance Association. Santiago has authored or co-authored a wide variety of books and academic papers of high standing on bank funding, competition, liquidity risk, efficiency, new banking business models, payments systems, financial instruments and strategic, systemic and policy issues in the banking industry. Santiago is currently a consultant for the Bank of Spain and the Bank of Ghana and has previously worked in advisory roles for the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, the European Central Bank, the European Commission, the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and the Spanish Ministry of Labor. He has also been the national coordinator of the research project grants for the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. Santiago is the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Financial Management, Markets and Institutions (JFMI). And Associate Editor of the Journal of Financial Stability. 

Edward Lee is a Professor of Accounting and Finance at the Alliance Manchester Business School, University of Manchester. He is Joint Editor of Accounting and Business Research. He also serves as Associate Editor of the British Accounting Review and the European Journal of Finance, and is an editorial board member of the European Accounting Review. He has published widely in leading accounting and finance journals.

Registration Paper Presenters must register for the conference on-line on or before 20 th August to secure a place on the programme. The final deadline to register for attendance only is 30 th August. Please note places are limited and so please register early to avoid disappointment.


  • £150 for members or £180 for non-members (to include £30 annual membership) – (£125 and £150 respectively without the conference dinner). 
  • £130 for PhD students or £145 for PhD student non-members (to include £15 annual membership) – (£105 and £130 respectively without the conference dinner).

The fees cover conference registration and pack, lunch, tea and coffee for the two days, and the conference dinner on 15 th September 2017 (£25). The conference dinner will be held at in the Hugh Ellis hall at Bangor University.
