Public Services & Charities SIG: Creation of a Research Agenda

Following up on a suggestion by Pam Stapleton (University of Manchester), BAFA's Public Services and Charities SIG organised a one-day brainstorming session on ‘Public Services and Charities Accounting and Finance Research’. Academics from a number of universities got together in Manchester in February 2020 to develop a research agenda for academics and research students exploring issues in public services and charities.

We wanted to create an output that could be widely circulated to public-service accounting and finance scholars. The resulting report can be downloaded here.

Originally it was intended that Anne Stafford (University of Manchester) would present the key ideas at BAFA’s 2020 Annual Conference in Southampton (then the report would be more widely distributed); unfortunately, this was postponed because of the Covid-19 crisis. So, even though Anne was unable to enjoy the delights of presenting, we still want to give the report as wide a circulation as possible, to make the greatest impact. So, please read and circulate to all academics in your accounting/finance group and to any potential research students.

Not only does it include an interesting and helpful research agenda, but it also contains ideas relating to problematisation of issues, possible useful theories and methodologies, as well as helpful references. We hope that this report will contribute to more research in public services and charities. It is there to help the academy grow in numbers, breadth of study and in quality of output.
